i'm washing my clothes

Hehe. Yeah. One load of stuff that needed to get hand-washed, and another mother fucking load of jeans and other darks. ohemgee i sound like a housewife FML.
Had a massive case of insomnia last night... went to bed at 11, but fell asleep around 4am. It was horrible. And had to get up at 10am this morning to get 600 bricks which the aunts bought via ebay. 600 ok. Had to make two trips in a borrowed van and our old mitsubishi. My knee is now killing me, and the Bro said that he pulled his back pushing a heavy wheel barrow filled with bricks.
So now Le Old Mitsubishi is FILTHY. It needs a wash. and hallelujah water restrictions are over. Need to wash car next weekend. And clean the house. And buy stuff that the father unit wants. and pack. and clean out my room. and wash the bed sheets. and watch Salt. all in one saturday. (Am going cycling on sunday so anything on sunday is out of the question). Ah LG, Life's Good.

Kids these days

So I tutor a group of 2nd year undergrads, half are fairly decent, two really smart ones, and the rest somewhere between dumb and dumber.
Prac reports are due every tuesday, one week after the prac, and 10% is deducted for each day the report is late.
One of my ABSOLUTELY AMAZING students sent me this email to try to get less marks deducted.

Studentszomg

Basically, it sounds like he was thrashed all week.

And I like the bit where he said "Last semester my demonstrator was fairly accommodating if things like this arose". GUILT TRIP ME HEY??????
Am tempted to write "Red bull was invented for a reason" on his feedback sheet.

pro-life? ((Tags: nerdism, is em0)

I saw a segment on 60 minutes today, in which an anti-abortionist shot dead a doctor who performed abortions in the USA.

I have thought about what I'd do if I ever fell pregnant at this point in my life, and maybe because of my age, and even though I'm still doing my phd, I don't think I'd get an abortion, because I can bring up a child. But if I was 10 years younger, frightened, and knowing that I'd have no support and a bleak future, or if I had a medical condition in which falling pregnant would kill me (touch wood), an abortion would be my choice. And even though I don't think that abortions are "right", I can't say that they are "wrong" either, its a very morally thin line, and I'd never judge another woman who has had an abortion, nor would I try to talk someone out of having an abortion (but I wouldn't encourage it either).

What pissed me off a about the segment, was where the anti-abortionist was all high-and-mighty about his stance on abortion, but still killed a living breathing human being, one who already has an impact on many lives. I'm not saying that unborn fetuses aren't human, but the majority of abortions are done in the first trimester, when the fetus is not yet a baby, not yet born, and has had no impact on anyone's life, apart from his parents (and maybe close family and friends). I don't see how its right to kill a human, and still say "abortion is not right", whilst the doctor who performed abortions had probably helped more people than harm them.

What is wrong with fanatics who think that they are always right, and everyone else who has a different thought is wrong, and those that are wrong must be killed? They need help.

Yet another I think I died and went to heaven moment ((tag: omnomnoms)

So today being Friday, and Lee having the next 7 days off (how did she do that I have no idea... didn't know that nurses had it so good), the original plan was to catch up at some cafe in chaddy and waste the afternoon in Borders reading magazines. We ended up at Il fornaio (2 Acland St, St Kilda +61 3 9534 2922) instead (at 9pm fml) for dessert instead. We still did do the Borders thing, but had two sushi rolls instead and waited painfully for 8pm to arrive so we could leave and head to St Kilda because Col and Fran had a work function and everyone wanted to try the much lauded Il Fornaio (thank you Master Chef!).

We arrived earlier than the others, and it was a slow and painful death waiting for them because a look at the menu had us drooling and desperate to order. The waiters were pretty good, slightly scatter brained, probably due to the long day they had had, but was all good.

We had trouble deciphering the menu fml.

And when Col and Fran arrived with a friend in tow, they hadn't eaten dinner, so a main was ordered (risotto with peas, artichoke and some kind of really strong cheese) and devoured ASAP before dessert was served.

AND OMG. FUCK ME ITS SPC. DESSERT WAS AMAZING.

we ordered 4 to share between the 5 of us, and I ordered a chardonnay (victorian, can't remember which part), and the others ordered lattes, and were stuffed by the end.

First up was the famous snickers cake, which was yum, but later overshadowed by....

Snow white and Rose Red, meringue wings, a mango ice cream, strawberry sorbet and iced rose petals and strawberries. Its a very pretty dish, and was a brilliant mixture of sweet, sour, and intoxicating scent of roses. The meringue wings were an inspired touch, none of us could stop nibbling on them.

This was recommended by Lee's friend, had a really complicated name for us to remember, and although we were impressed by the poached pear stuffed with vanilla ice cream, the chocolate fondant was a bit too much for us by the end. I understand the combo though, the fruity lightness of the pear cut through the rich chocolate, but I think the pear should either be larger, or the fondant made smaller.

We also ordered a quince clafoutis with hazelnut icecream which I personally loved, but the others weren't too impressed. The clafoutis was steaming hot, and the ice cold hazelnut ice cream went brilliantly with the steaming cake. But the others didn't like the hot-cold combo. Ah well, to each his own.

To be honest, at first look at all the desserts, I thought each would be sickeningly sweet, but to my surprise, none were too cloying, or at least none of us got to the point where we thought that eating another mouthful would make us puke. Lee did think that the quince clafoutis was really sweet, but I think it was the fructose in the quince, and not from added sugar.

I want to go back and try their savory stuff (broad bean falafel..... and hand made paperdelle) and to try their creme brulee, and have another serving of Snow White and Rose Red. That dessert is just heaven, a dessert chef's dream, and IMHO overshadowed all the others.

One of my favourite websites, Mel: hot or not  interviewed the executive chef of Il fornaio today, talk about coincidences!

argh

Am currently running a linux-based software through a linux-based remote machine. Running so slow on my mac im going to kill myself soon. I thought the one at work was fucked up because of our crummy server, but now I think its my problem fml. Another phd student doesn't have any problems at all with his log in, but mine is just slow. or it may be because of the internet connection. THink i'll bring my macbook to work tomorrow and have a play.

Ok finally loaded up but I see the white screen of death. (Most molecular modelling programs we use have a black background by default, i think it makes colors pop up better. White just makes everything hard to see for some reason. light, eyes blah blah blah.). And no, this program does not have a white screen, a white screen means BAD.

Ok black screen has popped up but it takes 5 minutes to load a structure on to the screen FML i give up.

ARGH

TOO MANY PEOPLE UNDER ONE GODDAMN ROOF. MY CLOTHES ARE NEVER GETTING WASHED BECAUSE THERES NO DRYER, AND THE CLOTHES LINE IS PERPETUALLY FILLED WITH WET CLOTHES. AND THE ONE NIGHT WHERE THERE ARE NO CLOTHES ON THE CLOTHES LINE THE FUCKING WASHING IS FULL WITH CLOTHES WAITING TO GET WASHED. OMG HOW MANY CLOTHES DO YOU GUYS WEAR IN A WEEK???? HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU NEED TO WASH YOUR CLOTHES???????????? MINE HAVEN'T BEEN WASHED IN A FREAKING MONTH!!!!!!!
